Therapy for Men

Support for navigating the unique struggles of modern men.

It ain't easy.

As a man, I get it.

We face conflicting messages of what we should be. We live in a tug-of-war of expectations and pressures that seem impossible to live up to: strong AND sensitive, confident AND vulnerable, receptive AND assertive, productive/goal-oriented AND present/available.

I am a feminist, and I am glad that women have whole departments at universities and copious amounts of writing and thinking about their condition as women. But what about us men?

As men, we're just getting started investigating our unique issues.

I believe working with men and men's issues is the frontier of psychology. As a leader of men's groups, as a therapist, as a friend to many men, and as a man myself, I am passionate about helping us learn to navigate our unique challenges in the modern world.

Why? So that we can live our best lives and find true joy, meaning and connection with others and our sense of purpose. In doing so, we step into our unique way of being of service to the world, and offering our individual gifts to our communities.

You may be feeling that...

...you're overwhelmed by pressures and expectations from others and yourself.

...no one really fully understands your struggles.

...often you just want to "check out" by various distractions or addictions that you then feel shame about.

...others don't fully appreciate all the hard work you put into your life, how hard you try to get it right.

...you're not living the most authentic version of your life.

The good news is that you're not alone. One of the first steps is to acknowledge that you could use some support, and reach out.

As a fellow man, I get it.

As men, we're really just getting starting investigating and clarifying our unique issues.

What therapy looks like

It's natural for men to support each other. In therapy, we meet weekly and discuss what's going on and do whatever we need to so you can live your best life.

I help you learn the things that I've learned from mentors, crucial skills and perspectives that men are rarely taught, yet desperately need.

I help you learn to acknowledge, feel and "be with" whatever is happening for you. Most of us avoid or dissociate from our true feelings, and cover them up in various ways.

One of my mantras (from a male mentor) is "Acknowledgement creates movement." As a therapist, I create a compassionate "space" for you to explore whatever is occuring, in your emotions and the felt-sense of your body, as well as your thoughts and your dreams.

Together, we identify what you want to change about your life, and then we work on getting there. Sometimes it's learning new skills and taking new risks, other times it's diving deep into long-unacknowledged wounds, so that they can finally heal.

Sometimes there's tears, and sometimes laughter. Along the way, either way, there's a-ha moments, and change...internal and external.

You don't have to go it alone.

I know the feeling of isolation that modern men can feel. That's why I'm here, consciously creating space just for men to explore who they are.

I've been attending men's groups and studying men's issues since I was 20 years old. I've been a participant and facilitator with the ManKind Project, which leads men through initiation rituals and supports thousands of men's groups across the world, one of which I founded in my hometown.

And yet I love working one-on-one men in therapy, so that I can offer the mentoring and healing support I wish I had many years ago. After many years and journeys of learning, I love offering what I've learned to other men, so that together we can grow and help make the world a better place.

If you feel I'd be a good support for you, reach out and let's talk. Blessings on your journey, and thank you for your courage to reach out if you feel called to do so.

Warmly, Evan
